“The High One”
NPT021: Inspired by Denali National Park and Preserve, June 2017. When visiting Denali, everyone wants a peek of the highest mountain in North America. Unfortunately, the clouds don’t always cooperate and you’re left imagining the view while considering the complicated history of how the mountain’s name has been changed over time. Continue reading “The High One”

Denali’s 100th Birthday
2016 was the National Park Service’s 100th birthday and it inspired me to write “Happy Birthday 100 Times” during a visit to Yellowstone on the actual day (August 25, 2016). Continue reading Denali’s 100th Birthday

“Cavesong”
NPT010: Inspired by Pinnacles National Park, December 2015. When I visited, Pinnacles was the newest of the 59 National Parks, signed into law by President Barack Obama on January 10, 2013. One of the unusual features of the park is a series of talus caves that are home to at least thirteen species of bats. I scrambled through some of these caves during my visit and it made me think about my own mild claustrophobia which has caused me to avoid exploring caves in the past. Continue reading “Cavesong”

“Always There”
NPT016: Inspired by Grand Teton National Park, August 2016. Just south of Yellowstone, Grand Teton National Park’s Teton Range stands ever-present in the distance, wherever you may roam. Continue reading “Always There”

“Happy Birthday 100 Times”
NPT018: Inspired by the National Park Service Centennial, August 25, 2016. Around the 99th birthday, I decided that I wanted to spend the National Park Service’s 100th Birthday in the 1st National Park, Yellowstone. This song was written in Yellowstone during that trip. Continue reading “Happy Birthday 100 Times”

“Python Problems”
NPT013: Inspired by Everglades National Park, February 2016. Invasive Burmese Pythons have become a menace in the Everglades, preying on the small mammals. Continue reading “Python Problems”

“Into the Wild”
NPT001: Inspired by Great Smoky Mountains National Park, 1997. I made what felt like a breakthrough observation a few days ago that one of the earliest songs that I ever wrote and recorded was actually inspired by a National Park and should be included in this project. I wrote “Into the Wild” at a time when I was frequently camping and backpacking in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The title was definitely influenced by the 1996 book by Jon Krakauer, which I had read around the same time but part of why I found the book fascinating was that it hinted at the allure of the outdoors that drove me to want to visit the first park that I became familiar with as an adult. Continue reading “Into the Wild”

“Valley of Death”
Inspired by Death Valley National Park, January 2016. I was a little surprised how much I enjoyed Death Valley National Park. I was taking advantage of being relatively nearby in Las Vegas for CES with a free weekend and didn’t really know much about it going in. Continue reading “Valley of Death”

“Ice Bat”
NPT006: Inspired by Cuyahoga Valley National Park, September 2014. I visited Cuyahoga Valley National Park while on tour with Royal Holland between dates in Cleveland and Canton, OH in September 2014. During our brief visit I saw that Ice Box Cave was closed to help prevent the spread of white-nose syndrome (WNS), a disease of cave-hibernating bats caused by a fungus. Continue reading “Ice Bat”
